☕️ Equipment Rental’s Role in Canada’s Housing Innovation
⏱️ Read time: 2 minutes
Hey 👋
Canada is ramping up efforts to solve the housing crisis, and the Centre for Housing Innovation (CHI) at Toronto Metropolitan University’s DMZ is leading the charge. With a $3.5 million investment from the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario, CHI will fast-track housing technologies and train professionals to meet urgent housing demands.
But where does the equipment rental industry fit into this bold initiative? Spoiler: It’s a critical piece of the puzzle.

Why Equipment Rentals Are Key
Online Rentals: Empowering Innovation
CHI’s Accelerator for Housing Solutions, launching in April 2025, will pilot cutting-edge construction methods. Rental companies can contribute by embracing online rentals, helping startups and contractors access the tools and machinery they need quickly and efficiently.
Online platforms like Heyquip enable rental centers to improve customer service for entrepreneurs, speeding up project timelines and enhancing site efficiency. Heyquip’s customer portal empowers contractors to manage their rentals with ease, while rental centers benefit from streamlined management tools. Faster rentals mean faster builds, creating a win-win for all parties involved.
Renting: The Greener Solution
The push for eco-friendly construction aligns perfectly with the rental model. Why? Renting reduces overall waste and promotes shared use, minimizing the environmental footprint. Plus, purchasing sustainable equipment like electric or hybrid machinery is often too expensive for construction firms. Rentals provide affordable access to these technologies, allowing contractors to meet environmental goals without significant upfront costs.
A Special Shoutout to GroundBreak Ventures

Expand their client base.
Cement their role as enablers of innovation.
Showcase the impact of sustainable and advanced equipment solutions.
