☕️ Another Suprise For the Industry : Herc Rentals Faces Potential Strike

⏱️ Read time: 1.5 minute

Hey 👋,

Big news in the rental world—workers at Herc Rentals, one of North America's largest equipment rental companies, have unanimously authorized a strike.

This is from the same company that outbid United Rentals in buying H&E Equipment.

The Teamsters Local 639 (union representation for the industry) voted in favor of a strike if contract negotiations fail, citing concerns over wages, job security, and working conditions for Herc Rental employees. With over 7,700 employees across more than 439 (22 locations in Canada) locations, a work stoppage could disrupt rental operations and impact contractor access to essential equipment.

What’s at stake?

The impact is currently localized—it mostly involves US employees.

While this labor action does not directly affect Herc Rentals operations in Canada, it raises broader industry concerns.

  • Minimal short-term disruption in Canada – No immediate effect on local rental availability.

  • Industry-wide labor pressure – This could influence future contract negotiations across North America, as employees want better conditions and may consider local rental.

  • Supply chain considerations – Contractors will most likely monitor potential operational slowdowns and may choose to take their business elsewhere, which could influence local rental centers.

The bigger picture

This makes us think, is there a way to improve employee satisfaction in the industry? Good working conditions are important, but so is giving employees the tools to thrive and learn.

How do you see this affecting you or our industry?

Will smaller rental businesses benefit from the uncertainty at Herc?
